For starters, the GCN and PS2 versions run in standard Dolby Surround. Winner: Xbox by a landslide SoundTesting the game's audio yielding some downright shocking results. And the online action certainly can't measure up to the Xbox extras. (This is one of the real draws of the PC title.) Unfortunately, online PS2 play is a mess: few players, unreliable games, and overall lackluster play. The real thrill of THPS3 lies in the single player mode, but the thought of multi-play is somewhat appealing. I will address the progressive scan video and the custom playlist features in the video and audio sections, but as basic elements of the game they do much to add special value to the Xbox version. The one thing the PS2 version has going for it is the online play. Sharply rendered and cleverly animated, X-Ray even comes with four of his/her own special moves. On top of that you get X-Ray, the skeleton skater. One can only hope that this is a sign of things to come, as it is huge, colorful, and runs very smoothly. I wish this level were available in career mode, as a full goal list would have been great fun, but Neversoft was nice enough to include a single goal that produced some nice cinematic results. Firstly, you get an entirely new level, the Oil Rig. Neversoft took their damn time, but look at the payoff. very choppy areas, that tainted the PS2 version. Not only are there no special features in the GCN game, but you also find the same problems, i.e. There was plenty of time for Neversoft to work out the kinks that plagued the PS2 version, but they basically did a straight port. So how do you cut the cake? I can say with certainty that the GCN version is the most disappointing, all things considered. But by the same token, the PS2 game was released much earlier and still has all of the basics. The team had much more time to work on the Xbox version, so you'd expect more. I tried to keep time in mind while mulling over the features. Winner: PS2 by a hair FeaturesThis is where things get good, and somewhat complicated. And as most tricks, and all of the special moves, use Up, Down, Right, and Left as opposed to diagonal combinations, the Dual Shock 2's D-pad feels just right. The symmetrical orientation of the action buttons allows for perfect control of your main tricks and the shoulder buttons offer the perfect amount of resistance. I have grown fond of the GCN and Xbox controllers, but the Dual Shock 2 is really the business, at least for this game. In this respect, the PS2 version takes the cake. There's a subtle floating quality to the camera that takes away from the hard and fast action of Hawk.Because the controls are so similar, the advantage really comes from the controller. I have, however, come to notice that I enjoy playing the GameCube version the least because the camera acts slightly weird. All systems also use a shoulder button for the revert move, which is the only real addition to THPS3 in terms of control. All tricks are comprised of one or more of the following individual moves: ollie, kick, grab, and grind. ControlThankfully, the controls across all three platforms are almost identical. And this is the only place you'll find the answer to that question. The real question is whether or not you own the right copy of Hawk. I think you'll agree that we've made some interesting discoveries.Odds are that you already own at least one copy of Hawk. And afterward there was plenty of Did you know that¿ conversation. More than once I had to call in one of the "real" games editors to witness an anomaly. I will, however, reference the PC port from time to time. While many of these results were pretty predictable, a few real surprises popped up during the back-to-back play. There are too many variables that depend on your PC. I had to take over.) I say "ironically" because the PC version is not in this shoot-out. (I walked over to find those idiots trying to play it with a keyboard, just kinda staring at the monitor. Ironically, I decided to put this head-to-head together after writing PC review. and my head flow in Halo, but I can hold my own and then some with Hawk. I might get my ass whooped at Smash Bros. The only time I'm called upon is when THPS3 is at stake.
